### Mandatory since June 2025

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) - implemented in Germany as the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) - has been in force since June 28, 2025\. Online shops must meet the WCAG 2.1 AA standard.

### Who is affected

Shopify stores that operate in the EU or sell to EU customers - from 10 employees or over 2 million euros in annual revenue. Companies outside Europe selling to EU customers must meet the standards too.

### Risks of non-compliance

Heavy fines, formal warnings (Abmahnungen), or court proceedings - accessibility gaps are an open legal flank for every shop in scope.
