Migration

# WooCommerce to Shopify, without the WordPress maintenance tax

WooCommerce is free until you count the hosting, the security plugin, the caching plugin, the backup plugin, and the developer who reconciles them after every WordPress core update. We move WooCommerce stores to Shopify and leave that whole layer behind.

Why leave WooCommerce

## The bill WooCommerce does not show you

WooCommerce is a plugin on a content management system, and it inherits everything that comes with that. A hosting decision, an update cycle you own, and a security surface that grows with every plugin you add to fill a gap.

![Illustration of a security shield representing Shopify's managed hosting](https://shoplab.cc/images/shopify/why-secure.jpg)

### Security and uptime stop being yours

WordPress powers a huge share of the web, which makes it a huge share of the attack surface. On Shopify, patching, PCI compliance and uptime are the platform's contractual problem rather than a plugin you hope is still maintained.

### Twenty plugins become a handful

A typical WooCommerce store runs plugins for checkout fields, shipping rules, SEO, caching, backups, currency and reviews. Most of that is native on Shopify. We map each one to a native feature, an app, or a small piece of code you own.

### Speed without a caching stack

WooCommerce performance is a tuning exercise: object cache, page cache, a CDN, image optimisation, and a database that slows as orders accumulate. Shopify serves from its own global infrastructure, so speed does not degrade as you grow.

### A checkout that already converts

The WooCommerce checkout is a template you extend and hope you have not broken. Shopify's comes with Shop Pay and local payment methods built in, and it is the single change most WooCommerce merchants notice first.

The WooCommerce migration

## How WooCommerce data lands cleanly in Shopify

WooCommerce stores products as WordPress posts with meta fields, so the parts of your catalog that matter often live where no generic export will find them. Variable products, attribute taxonomies and whatever your theme invented all need a decision before they move.

01

### Plugin and data audit

We list every active plugin, what it stores and where, and which ones your storefront genuinely depends on. That audit becomes the migration plan. It decides what turns into a Shopify feature, what turns into a metafield, and what quietly gets retired.

02

### Products, variations and customers

Variable products and attribute taxonomies map to Shopify variants and options, custom fields to metafields, and customer accounts move with their addresses and order history. Coupons, tax rules and shipping zones get rebuilt as Shopify equivalents rather than copied across.

03

### Content, URLs and redirects

Blog posts and landing pages come across, and every indexed WordPress URL gets a 301\. That includes permalink structures, which is where WooCommerce migrations most often lose traffic. We test the map against your real crawl data before the switch.

04

### Cutover and monitoring

DNS moves in a quiet window, with the WordPress site reachable behind it as a fallback. We then watch Search Console, logs and revenue daily until the re-crawl settles and the numbers look the way they should.

WooCommerce migration FAQ

## What WooCommerce merchants ask

Moving off WordPress: what transfers, what gets rebuilt, and what it costs.

![A shoplab specialist ready to answer your WooCommerce migration questions](https://shoplab.cc/images/faq/faq-contact.jpg)

On WooCommerce?

Let's look at your plugin stack.

###

Typically 6 to 12 weeks. WooCommerce catalogs export more predictably than Magento's, so the timeline usually comes down to the plugin stack and to how much of your storefront logic lives in a page builder rather than in the theme.

###

It comes with you. Posts, categories, authors and images migrate into Shopify's blog, and every post URL gets a 301\. If content marketing is a real traffic source for you, say so early, and we will treat the blog migration as part of the SEO plan rather than an afterthought.

###

You can, and occasionally it is right, usually when a large editorial operation already runs on WordPress. It does mean two systems, two deploys and a stitched together analytics story. For most stores that reintroduces exactly the maintenance they were trying to leave.

###

Subscriptions migrate, but not automatically. Payment tokens generally cannot move between processors, so active subscribers usually need to re-authorise. We plan that communication with you, because handling it badly is the one part of this migration that can cost real revenue.

###

Yes, with the redirect map done properly. The risk in WooCommerce migrations is specific: custom permalink structures and plugin-generated URLs that no sitemap lists. We pull the real URL inventory from crawl and analytics data rather than trusting the sitemap.

###

The subscription is a visible cost where WooCommerce's are spread across several invoices. Once you total hosting, plugin licences, security, backups and developer hours for updates, most stores we move find the numbers close, and the Shopify one is predictable.
